On May 7th, 2024, after separate outbreaks of Red Eye and bedbugs in the homes, it seemed like a good idea to remind the kids that each one of them can affect the health of their brothers and sisters for good or ill. So the question of the week was: What can I do this week to keep my brothers and sisters healthy and safe from illness?😇❤️

The kids from the Vine of Hope shared these answers:

1. Nangobi; Due to the outbreak of red eyes I don’t interact with the community members to avoid the spread.👥

2. Nabitaka; I always wash my hands before touching my face and eyes.👏🏽

3. Nambi; I will quickly report to Uncle Isa if there is an infected person among us to keep others from being infected.🗣️

4. Mwogezi; Due to the outbreak of bed bugs at our home I would encourage everyone to wash their clothes and bring out the mattresses in the sunshine.👕

5. Nakato; I would help everyone to keep their clothes and beds clean to that the bed bugs don’t increase on their number.🧼

6. Nangobi Aisha; With red eye, I would encourage each of us to play around home and not allowing any outside child to join us.🧍🏽‍♀️

7. Nakibuka; I will quickly report to our Uncle if there is a bedbug seen so that they can be treated in time to avoid their high spread.🪳

8. Nakayima; With red eyes I would encourage everyone to wash their hands regularly to keep them healthy and fight against red eyes.🛁

9. Mulondo; No handshakes from the outsiders and this can easily help us from getting infected with the red eyes.🫱🏼‍🫲🏻

10. Lubale; Keeping my bed clean can help me and my family not to get or keep any bedbugs inside.🛌

11. Luwazo; Due to the outbreak of bedbugs I would quickly take an action and treat them to avoid their high spread in everyone’s bed.🫸🏽

12. Waiswa; I would be reminding each of my brothers and sisters to keep away their hands from their faces unless they are washed and clean that’s the easy way to fight against red eyes.👁️

13. Nkugwa; I would be checking on everyone to see if there is no one infected with the red eyes and if so, I would quickly report to avoid the spread of the infection among us.🗣️

14. Twaha; No engaging in playing with the other children of the society til the red eyes are gone.👯‍♀️

15. Mbweila; Due to the outbreak of bedbugs in our home I would take an action of checking everyone’s bed to see if there are bedbugs and after I will report to Aunty Kawooma.👀

16. Makanika; Bedbugs don’t like being in clean places so I would encourage everyone to be clean and their beds to keep them clean.🛌

17. Nbone; I would help with advising everyone to put their mattresses and blankets outside the sunshine daily since bedbugs don’t like too much heat from the sun.🌞

Listening to your intelligence:

IMG_4223.jpeg
Rosey Lieske

On Monday, December 9th, the kids were given a poem by the Persian mystic, Rumi:

“Your intelligence is always with you. Overseeing your body,
even if you may not be aware of its work.

If you start doing something against your health,
your intelligence eventually scolds you.

If it hadn’t been so lovingly close by,
and so constantly monitoring,
how could it rebuke?

You and your intelligence are like
the beauty and precision of a navigating tool.
Together you calculate how near existence is
to the Sun!”

So, the question for the week was: What does your intelligence tell you to do
to be healthy?

At Savannah Rose, these recent actions were helping the kids stay healthy:

This week, we engaged the children in a reflection on the importance of small actions that contribute to long-term health. In line with our mission to empower the children to make healthy choices, we asked them to share one small habit or action they’ve recently adopted that they believe will have a positive impact on their well-being in the future.

The children’s responses were thoughtful and inspiring, showcasing their growing awareness of health and wellness. Each of them shared a simple but meaningful practice that reflects their commitment to better habits. Below are their responses:

Erizeth: “Waking up earlier for stretches before school helps feel more awake.”🙂

Rihanna: “Switching chips for fruits as snacks has already made me feel better!”🍎

Kyatwike: “Walking to school instead of taking a ride has been great exercise.”🚶🏽

Christopher: “Wearing a hat when going outside prevents getting too hot or sick.”🧢

Benjamin: “Washing my face with cool water every morning refreshes me and improves my skin.”💦

Flowrence: “Taking a quiet moment to breathe deeply every day helps me stay calm.”🙏

Victor: “Sitting up straight while studying makes it easier to focus.”✍🏼

Jeremiah: “Eating breakfast every day gives me the energy I need for the day.”🍳

Desilanta: “Spending more time helping in the garden keeps me active and happy.”🌿

Mark: “Taking short breaks when sitting for too long helps keep my body moving.”🚶🏽

Francis: “Using a handkerchief instead of hands to wipe my nose keeps things cleaner.”👃

Salima: “Drinking tea with ginger when feeling cold helps me feel better.”☕️

Shalom: “Smiling more, even when not feeling great, helps lift my mood.”😊

Reflection Outcome:
The children took this activity seriously and demonstrated a keen understanding of how small actions—such as eating healthier, staying active, and maintaining good hygiene—can have a big impact on their health in the long term. It was wonderful to see them so engaged and excited to share their efforts.

These reflections are a powerful reminder that health is shaped not just by big decisions, but by the small, daily actions that, when done consistently, make a world of difference. Moving forward, it’s good to continue encouraging these healthy habits while celebrating the children’s commitment to their well-being.
